Description

Domtar is seeking a Senior Environmental Engineer at their Pulp & Paper Mill in Hawesville, Kentucky. The Senior Environmental Engineer reports to the EHS Manager.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, compiling and submitting monitoring reports; the reporting of environmental incidents and excursions; assisting with the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS) and the defining of roles, responsibilities and accountability at all levels and all departments within Hawesville Operations.  Essential duties include:

  • Serves as a resource to Hawesville Operations and Maintenance Department to ensure that systems and process are established that results in meeting or exceeding the environmental regulations and Domtar performance standards and expectations.
  • Assists Operation/Maintenance personnel in the investigation of all environmental incidents.
  • Conducts tasks within a structured EMS.
  • Develops environmental standard operating procedures and reviews operational and maintenance procedures to ensure that environmental considerations are incorporated when and where applicable.
  • Identifies trends in and facilitates teams to address recurring environmental problems.
  • Stays up to date on environmental regulations, policies, and programs.
  • Ensures that document control procedures are followed for the identification, storage, retrieval, and disposition of environmental records.
  • Participates in corporate sponsored environmental audits and teams upon request.

Safety and Environmental Duties

  • Participates in the development of safety goals for the department.
  • Exercises personal responsibility to prevent harm to self, others, and the environment.
  • Wears personal protection equipment according to mill policy, postings, and conditions.
  • Actively participates in the mill safety system as a member of a task safety team or committee.
  • Licensed to manage and operate a landfill, operate a Class IV wastewater treatment system and Class IIB-D drinking water system.
  • Completes recurrent training for Hazardous Materials Management and DOT HAZMAT Shipping.
  • Certified in EPA Method 9 visual opacity measurement. 
  • Ensures that accurate and complete reports to Environmental Regulatory Agencies are submitted in a timely manner, including but not limited to Discharge Monitoring Reports (DMRs), Toxic Release Inventory Reports, Water Withdrawal Reports, Quarterly Landfill Reports, Groundwater Monitoring Reports, and Hazardous Waste Reports.
  • Makes scheduled rounds to verify environmental standards and expectations are being met.
  • Responds to emergencies and crises to prevent and mitigate emission/release impacts.
  • Establishes and maintains effective procedures to meet housekeeping standards within the department and at all monitoring and testing locations.
  • Reviews new chemicals used on-site to minimize hazardous waste generation and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
  • Lead assigned regulatory program areas.  Program areas could include, but not limited to NPDES, Drinking Water, Solid Waste, Title V, LDAR, Certified Wastewater Lab, etc.
  • Work across environmental media to learn and serve as back up authority in other environmental areas.


Requirements

  • BS in an environmental engineering field; ChE, CE, or Environmental Sciences preferred
  • Ten years direct experience in environmental engineering/management
  • Verifiable experience in environmental permitting, particularly in Water
  • Verifiable experience in regulatory agency interface
  • Knowledge of Water programs, including NPDES, KPDES
  • Experience with compliance verification programs
  • Licensed Landfill Manager, Class IV WWT Operator, and Class IIB-D Drinking Water Operator preferred
  • Knowledge of water, solid waste, and hazardous waste programs preferred
  • Knowledge of EMS, ISO 14001 version 2015
  • Versatile in all suites of Microsoft Office
