
Description
Individual is responsible to assist the Director in the overall operation, administration and budget of the Water Department. Deputy Director shall ensure that potable water is produces and distributed throughout the Town in a safe and efficient manner and shall promote and monitor the protection of the public water supply, well heads, groundwater reservoirs and aquifers.

Examples of General Duties and Responsibilities:
Shall prepare and ensure compliance with all Town Ordinances, Rules, Regulations and Procedures that relate to the Public Drinking Water Supply and other environmental issues; daily operational plans and overall strategic planning; acquires and maintains the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to oversee the Town’s compliance with all applicable Federal, State and Local rules and regulations pertaining to the Safe Drinking Water Act; provides detailed and specific technical and administrative support to the Director, Town Council, Departments, Boards, Commission and the public; prepares, reviews and maintains various reports, logs documents, plans, regulations and records that pertain to the water system; provides technical and administrative staff support to the Ground Water Committee and/or the Conservation Commission.
Other Duties: May perform related duties as requested by the Director of Water Supply.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Graduation from a four-year college with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or Hydrogeology or in the physical or biological sciences preferred; and 5-10 years’ experience in operating a municipal water system or an equivalent combination of education and related training and experience. A Rhode Island Grade 3 Distribution Certification and Grade 2 Treatment Certification will be required within one year of employment.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must be able to work with other public officials, departments, regulatory agencies and the like ensuring at all times the public is served in a manner that reflects positively on the Town; must possess the computer, oral, and written communication skills necessary to write, review and comment on reports, plans, drawings, ordinances, correspondence, memorandums, data bases, spreadsheets, schedules and other documents; has a thorough knowledge of Water Department Rules and Regulation and ensures that all work completed is in conformance with Department Rules and Regulations and all required permits have been obtained; must maintain a valid driver’s license; and must maintain Rhode Island Treatment and Distribution Certification equal to that required by the State.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Individuals must be skilled in the use of various office equipment such as computers, typewriters, telephones, two-way radios, copy and fax machines.
Work Environment:
Individual will work primarily indoors during normal Town Office hours. However, there may be times when overtime or other than normal office hours are required.
